Store Operations
Organised retailers require trained managers o control the sales & operations at multiple locations. The managers are required to be multi-skilled to be able to manage varied activities at the store level. Some of the experienced managers are also responsible to identify new store locations and develop the stores in newer markets

Merchandising
Buying is a discipline that can make or break a retail company. Organised retailers have specialised people who are responsible for understanding the customer needs and buying of goods that will be stored. Retail companies appoint visual merchandising professionals who manage the presentation of these products in order to attract the customers.

Supply Chain Inventory
With 100s of stores and 1000s of suppliers the supply chain and distribution of products between these stores becomes another challenge. Hence the retail companies appoint managers to look after smooth supplies, management of inventories and for keeping a check of pilferage and shrinkage. In addition there are warehouse managers, fleet managers, etc to protiect the supply chain assets.

The career of 90s was Computers and 2000 was Call centers & BPO. But the career in 2010 will be RETAIL. Retail is a big career opportunity that is about to explode in next few years to come. According to industry estimates their will be around 120 lakh job opportunities in the retail sector. Unlike other industries, Retail will offer ample opportunities for people from all backgrounds and section of society.

A common challenge faced by all Indian and foreign retail companies, is lack of skilled manpower. With these large Indian and Foreign businesses coming into retail, there will be a huge requirement of people across functions including sales, marketing, IT, HR, finance, etc. The underlying challenge is that none of these professionals have a holistic knowledge and understanding of Retail. According to a report there is an immediate shortage of 18,000 retail professionals in Delhi & Mumbai alone. This is projected to grow to 12 million by year 2011. With 12 million people working in Retail atleast 1.2 million line managers and another 50000 middle managers will be needed.

The early starters will have an advantage in terms of experience and will be most sought after. This remaining will eventually follow the footsteps and turn to retail. Where will you like to be? A leader or a follower!
